This great all-rounder began life as a Mac OS app which has been ported to iOS for the iPad2. Probably the most famous iPad music app, GarageBand uses a bunch of virtual instruments – among them piano, guitar and drums – and functions as a virtual studio for laying down multiple tracks. Users can even plug in an electric guitar to record real riffs, and the on-board mic can record your lyrics. GarageBand is ideal for beginners because it’s so easy to use. Price: $4.99

Pianist Pro

Featured in the Apple TV ads, Pianist Pro allows you to play a virtual piano, with an astonishingly faithful reproduction of the piano sound, and also includes a drum machine and an arpeggiator, ie a feature that automatically runs through the notes of a chord, played separately.
