As the latest universal Infrared remote control to arrive for iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads, the i-Got-Control iRB1 ($70) from hitherto unknown company iGi Corp. (“i-Got-it”) combines a black plastic dongle with a free downloadable i-Got-Control application to transform an iOS device into a semi-programmable remote control for home entertainment systems. The application includes a library of control codes for numerous manufacturers and certain types of electronics, notably omitting DVRs unless you know where to look, using an automated search button to test each code against your devices until you find ones that work. If you can’t find a working code, you can program i-Got-Control manually with your existing remote. At that point, you’re ready to assemble a collection of multi-screen remotes that you can switch between at will, separately controlling your TV, DVD player, and the like whenever the dongle is attached to your device. A “Master Volume” setting lets you choose one device to receive volume commands regardless of whichever remote you happen to be using, saving you the need to flip between remotes for that particular feature.
