Editing documents on the minuscule screen of iPhone made little sense, but iPad sports a bigger display and thus can be used to do editing. Unfortunately, Microsoft has no plans to make iPad version of word, even though they just release Office Mobile 2010 for Windows Phones for free. However, if you can accept few compromises, then you can edit the Word documents on your iPad.

First option is Apple’s very own, Pages app, which retails for $10. I tested it and lot of formatting is lost when importing the document from the Desktop. However, if you make a document in Pages, it would look exactly the same on the Desktop. Clearly, the iPad version is just not powerful enough.

Second and my favorite way of editing is by using Doc HD which would cost you $6. It offers basically the same feature set as the Pages app, but also lets you share the docs via Wi-Fi as-well-as send the docs as email attachments. [doc hd]

Documents to Go Premium is the another great choice for editing documents. It offers editing support for word, excel and powerpoint documents. If you can afford its $12 price tag, go for this application [Documents to Go iPad]

Viewing documents is much easier on the iPad. We would heartly recommend the $1 GoodReader app for that. Excellent – very.
