Kindle Fire vs iPad2

We had written about how iPad 2 stacks up against other tablets worth considering. Amazon has fired off their Kindle Fire and according to newest stats pre-orders of Amazon Kindle Fire are selling like hot cakes. In fact, Kindle Fire is on its way to outsell iPad 2 flat out. Fire android tablet sells at a rate of 200o units per hour, or 50,000 per day. After 5 day Amazon racked up 250,000 Fire tablets. At this rate Amazon will have 2.5 million Fire tablets pre-sold before its official release date of November 15th. The svelte Kindle Fire begins shipping this month, and it’s priced very competitively next to the iPad 2.

Market capitalism revolves around choice, but this is a tricky call. Whether you should opt for the cut-priced Kindle Fire or the full-on iPad depends entirely on what you intend to use the tablet for, who will be using it, and, well, your budget too. You might simply want to watch movies whilst stretched out on the sofa, browsing the odd magazine, sending an email to your friends about how you’re spoiling yourself with some quality time out…try the Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire naturally doesn’t yet have anything like the multitude of apps available for the iPad, but it does have a vibrant 16:9 display, access to Amazon’s enormous library, and a snappy browser that cleverly makes use of Amazon’s cloud to pre-load your favorite pages for lightning load times. If you just want to enjoy media files while on the go, the Kindle Fire will be right up your street, since it’s dinkier and lighter, and doubtless will soon support Office Docs, enabling you to keep abreast of your workload.

Of course, with a 3G iPad you can connect to the internet anywhere, if you need to be online at the drop of a hat. The iPad’s Bluetooth and front-facing webcam allow you to videoconference while out and about. And the iPad doesn’t rely on the cloud for storage, which gives you a bit more control. It’s even better if you can persuade your boss to buy you one as an essential 21st century work tool. There is the novelty factor to consider. The iPad brings a totally new experience, and Apple has built a charmed walled garden for anyone who’s bought into this techno-paradise – if you already have a MacBook Pro, new iMaciPhone 4S, or Apple TV, they’ll greatly enhance your iPad experience.

With the iCloud and iMessaging you can sync your entire cyber-world content across devices, making it available wherever you are. For those of us without $500 to shell out on an admittedly very useful gadget, the $200 Kindle Fire represents a far more attractive deal. Amazon Kindle Fire offers less features – no image capture means no photos or video, smaller screen real estate, less built-in storage space…yet there are easy workarounds, often as simple as spending five minutes every night prepping tomorrow’s content. Shifting a few files around is not exactly hard labor. For those of us whose parents or grandparents are just about getting to grips with getting online, or worse still with no patience for all these “new-fangled devices”, how about a nice inexpensive touch-enabled device to give them a foothold in cyberspace? Tapping an icon of their favorite newspaper is a world away from typing an address into a browser. And the Kindle Fire won’t disappoint anyone with such modest aspirations. A quick twenty minute crash course should put them on the right track, just remember to set up the device so absolutely everything is exactly one click away. Not that the iPad 2 interface isn’t intuitive, if you’re stuffed with cash. Is it all a question of price? Maybe. But there’s a mighty big difference between the prices of Amazon’s Kindle Fire and the iPad 2. Think what you could do with all that spare cash.
