os-x-lion

The name Mac OS X lion has been lingering in the tech world since October last year but just recently, developers got their hands on preview copies of the new OS from Apple. New OS X Lion is very powerful operating system with user friendly functionality. There are over 250 new features to OS X Lion and many of them are derived from touch screen use of the iPad. Let us take a closer look at some of the new features of on the new OS X Lion.

The Launchpad
Now, to get started with work simplification, Apple utilized an iOS based app launched called the Launchpad.

I ma personally used to good old Finder, Spotlight and Dock to access my programs. For those who used the iPad before a Macbook, they may find this UI very appealing.

Full Screen
You’re gonna love the full screen mode. Unfortunately, not all apps will benefit from full screen mode. Developers are being asked to start developing apps for this mode. Some apps like Safari and iPhoto will look fantastic in full screen mode. Mac OS X Lion takes some elements from iOS like the app swiping feature to move from one app to another by swiping them using a 3 finger swipe motion.

Here is a quick look at 3, 4 and 5 finger gestures in video:

Mission Control
The first 2 apps are designed for beginners and casual Mac users. If you are a power user and you need more complex organizational capacity, then Mission Control is the feature that you will love. This merges elements of Spaces and Expose. Mission Control makes good use of the apps. It does not really reduce that much of the complexity but it makes it easier to manage all the active apps that you are using. For some, the multitasking in mission control is a lot better compared to Launchpad.

App management and multitasking
A big change in the Mac OS X Lion is that it can manage the system resources for the user more effectively. To save more power, OS X Lion can freeze some apps on the background and make it more energy efficient to do tasks or focus processing power on the active apps. You can choose to manually adjust it depending on your particular needs. You can certainly customize how the computer uses its power.

With the new Lion OS, the gestures that you do on the trackpad are a lot smoother and more natural.

Saving files is also jam packed with new features. Auto Save allows saving files across various periods. Versions are like a time machine in which you can select from several versions of the file and select the one that works for you the best.

Airdrop is one of the best features in the OS X Lion. You can now enjoy file transfers via WiFi. When you activate it, you become detectable to other WiFi enable Mac computers. The new chips on updated Mac notebooks allow you to do a simple switch from file transfer to a standard connection.
