iPad can play only two formats out-of-box – MP4 and H.264. But thanks to this 5 dollar app, you will able to play avi, DivX/Xvid, WMV, H.264 files on your iPad. The app is called yxplayer and does a satisfactory job at playing back videos.
I tried this and the playback was not silky smooth, but certainly watchable. The AVI of a TV episode played well, but a movie which I downloaded from a torrent did not play smooth as I expected. [link]
