This is what I’m talking about! Developers Gameloft have not only achieved a fabulous migration of the Splinter Cell franchise onto the iPad, they have made excellent improvements along the way. Also available for iPhone 4, this HD version for iPad has you assuming the role of disgruntled renegade agent Sam Fisher as he continues the fight to avenge his daughter. This has to be one of the best third-person action games ever made, and it’s certainly the best available for the iPad so far.

I always hesitate before awarding any game top marks in any of the ‘Scores’ criteria. Giving a game 10 / 10 is a big deal… However, for Splinter Cell Conviction HD, my hesitation only lasted a couple of seconds. This game is the best gaming fun I have had on my iPad yet, and so it deservedly gets 10 / 10 for ‘Fun Factor’. No game is perfect, but this sure gets close!
It seems like an obvious thing to say, but since the iPad doesn’t boast the processing and memory power of a desktop, inevitable compromises have to be made. These decisions will always leave some users dissatisfied, but I believe Gameloft have made the best of what is available to them. For example: you can interrogate but only by punching; you can shoot lights out but only certain ones; there is no direct control over crouching; no choice for executions; and so on. For me these idiosyncrasies didn’t detract at all from gameplay, which is a highly enjoyable experience.
Graphics and animations are just delicious with action occurring all over the screen. There are several ways to complete the levels, either by blasting all the enemies and solving the puzzles, or trying to play as a stealth character. The gaming environments take you from the depths of Iraq all the way to Washington DC and are rendered in a detailed and atmospheric way. Even the voices aren’t annoying, a plague that affects some other Gameloft releases! One of the few criticisms I would level at the game is its length. An experienced gamer could complete this game in a couple of days at most. However, this is again one of those unfortunate compromises of developing a game for a limited platform.
