Anyone who has read some of my previous games reviews will know that I am a Star Wars freak. There’s a particular moment in Episode III when C-3PO plays chess with Chewbacca. I want one of those chess sets! All the figures are in 3D and animate as they move. Now I’m not saying that Ogs boasts this intergalactic technology, but it does bare a fantastic similarity: it’s like a traditional board game, specifically designed for two players. Unlike a board game, however, the pieces have moves, speeds and skills of their own. And they animate, giving the experience of playing a board game a whole new dimension.
The overall simplicity of this game is one of its main features. Your task is to populate the pond, the board playing area, with various creatures under your control, and reach your opponent’s side of the pond, thus winning the game. There are tricks and treats along the way, enabling you to give your creatures more energy and therefore more speed. This game could have been based on an old-fashioned game using a solid board and physical pieces. It wasn’t, and the virtual world within which you play gives it an extra level of fun. Because of its simplicity, it is a straightforward game to play, with no complicated rules and agendas. Again, the winning formula of simplicity produces another winning feature.
There are many so-called “two player mode” games available for iPad, but most of these have you and your friend pitching yourselves against the computer in a split screen. Ogs is different. Since you are playing a real opponent, game play achieves that certain level of unpredictability that is impossible to generate using a software programme.
Like many of the most basic games, Ogs becomes very addictive very quickly, especially when your opponent has trounced you a few times. You always want to get in a rematch to even up the scores. It is also completely child-friendly, so parents can buy this app in total confidence. Be careful though: if your kids are anything like my two boys they’ll be squabbling over perceived “foul moves” before long…. A great game, and well worth the few cents paid.
Ogs is available for $0.99 from iTunes:
