How good is Gameloft? This is the second ‘1st Person Shooter’ I’ve looked at recently, and again it is totally amazing. A few weeks’ ago we became a 2 iPad family, following my teenaged son’s birthday. He’s regularly online with his iPad playing the multiplayer Modern Combat Sandstorm HD with his friends. I’ve joined them a couple of times too and it really is a thrilling game as you go into war together. It shames me to admit, however, that Jack is so much better at this than me!

Modern Combat Sandstorm HD is as close as you can get to a console 1st person shooter on the iPad. Everything’s there: superior HD graphics, seamless dynamic animation, exquisite sound and most importantly pacey game-play.
You play a modern soldier assigned to Operation Sandstorm, tasked with fighting the terrorist insurgence in a Middle Eastern hot spot. As a secondary mission you must also recruit as many of the locals as you can to join your alliance. There are several weapons to choose from, most of which are picked up along the way, including a banging shotgun and a blazing bazooka. Attacks are made by a standard aim and shoot or by using the sight for more precision. If you’re up close and personal against an enemy then the app will automatically smack them with your weapon rather than fire – very handy if you’re holding the bazooka! Along the way you replenish ammunition and pick up health packs.
There are 10 missions to choose from each with fantastically created environments. A mini-map for each environment helps you navigate successfully and allows the element of surprise against your enemy. Voice-overs and animations add to the enjoyment of the game and give you a little breathing space along the way.
The only minor criticism is that Gameloft have pushed the iPad’s capabilities so far to its limits that the game will occasionally judder or give you a laggy response. This is definitely a hardware problem but one that Gameloft should have considered when developing this game. When the next generation iPad is released with increased processing power I’m sure these issues will be resolved.
Modern Combat Sandstorm HD is available for $4.99 from iTunes
