Wei Xinlong’s girlfriend wanted an iPad, but since the Changchun University student couldn’t afford one, he decided to build one himself. He went online and downloaded countless tutorials and manuals on how notebooks and tablets are built, then bought a touchscreen and battery online as well as an old ‘spares or repair’ laptop, which he stripped down for its motherboard, display, memory, processor, etc. He then put it all together to produce a home-made tablet, and even customized it with a rhinestone bezel.
Speaking to the China Daily, Wei explained “You can read, download, watch movies, and play games just by touching the screen.” It runs Windows 7 (despite the Apple logo) and in total cost 800 yuan, which is roughly $125. Naturally Sun Shasha, Wei’s girlfriend, was delighted to receive a home made iPad.
