The iPad mania has somehow reached a critical mass in just a few years. Dozens of models, including and especially iPad2 suggest tablets will be around for a pretty long time. It seems like a scene from a sci-fi movie from the past handheld screen, touch technology, great battery life. You can also use iPad for business and it comes with apps to further expand its functionality. These simple things, tasks and related stuff that you can do on a tablet really helped in redefining the use of the tablet. They are the new cool devices. However, technologies like these do have some limitations and these limitations make the tablets still a league of their own, making them only functional in a light that is different from laptop.
A laptop is a versatile device. You can run two or more programs at the same time. On top of that, computers come in a variety of models and options. A general user might favor a lightweight laptop but a gamer might push for a much powerful option. A number of people can attest that the tablets can pretty much address all computer needs of these people. This allows them to use the laptop or desktop less frequently. Some journalists use tablets to do their reporting or updating in real time. Some do not really have problems with doing typing and text editing that comfortable and it is also quite more limited what you can do to browsing. It really depends from person to person how he or she will be able to justify the usage of tablet computers.
Some of the things that you can fully enjoy on a laptop seem to be very much practical already in a slate tablet. However, unless you have tried it on your own, you will be disappointed about how it actually works. When you browse through a website that reacts on a mouse over, nothing happens anymore since there is no actual hover until you tap the finger to your screen. Also, most tablets seem to be more like giant smart phones in steroids. The concept of multitasking is also a bit dry. It is more of being able to use a music player while doing something else like the calculator or maybe doing some online browsing. The mobile OS like Android and others still do not have resolution to a side by side functionality like being able to do browsing at multiple times or two applications up front at once.
When it comes to typing, iPad is heading in good direction already. While not all people will be using the on screen keyboard or a miniature one to type a long article, some brands of tablets enable intuitive voice recognition to minimize the typing. There are some aspects that make the tablets more favorable than the laptops but for the most part with current trends and software options, I t seems that companies are not really gearing towards completely eradicating laptop computers. Yes, some tablets are sophisticated enough to be used for work but to be honest, they are at best, supplemental devices that you can use to make things a lot easier once you have already done the bulk of work on the laptop.
However, it is also too early in the life of tablets to close the debacle on the direction that it will take in the future. A lot of companies and chip set makers are trying to find the most competent specs that can beat regular laptop functionality. As it stands now laptops have their advantages and iPad or other tablets cannot thus far replace them all together.
