At iPad 3 Conference in San Francisco Apple’s CEO summarized sales for last quarter of 2011. In his words ‘Apple sold more iPads than any PC manufacturer sold PCs.’ Apple sold 15.4 million iPads, while HP sold 15.1 million of PCs.

Cook confirmed retina display on new iPad 3. The resolution will be as hoped 2048 x 1536 resolution, which is whopping 3.1 million pixels in total. Presenting it Cook joked about difficulties in presenting this iPad 3 on a huge screen. He said that iPad 3 has more pixels than the entire presentation display.

Pixel density of 264ppi is actually slightly less than in iPhone 4S (326ppi). This increases comfortable reading distance from 10 inches to 12-15 inches.

Color saturation is 44% better than in current iPad 2.

New A5X processor is dual-core, despite the rumours of 4 cores. There are however four graphics cores integrated in this A5X CPU. Cook compared Apple’s dual-core A5X to NVidia Tegra 3 and said A5X has 4 times the performance than Kal-El.

iPad 3 camera

iPad 3 has a 5MP rear facing camera with 5 element lens and IR filter. It is capable of 1080p video capturing. There is also a Auto-focus and auto-exposure.

Siri is included on iPad 3; supported in English, French, German and Japanese.

Connectivity will suffer a great improvement in the new iPad 3. iPad 2 delivered speed of 3.1MB per second on EV-DO and 7.2 MB per second via HSPA. iPad 3 will dazzle you with 21MB per second on HSPA+, or 42MB per second on DC-HSDPA. If you dig deeper into your pockets and get a LTE iPad 3 you will get an astonishing speed of 73MB per second. Verizon, Rogers, Bell, AT&T, and Telus will deliver this speed via LTE. 3G will be available around the world.

Battery will not lasts you 20 hours as speculated, but it does bring some improvements. Even though the battery will weigh you down some more (weight of new iPad 3 is 634g) and it is a full millimeter thicker, new battery will still hold out its promised 10 hours even with extra demands of speed and graphics. 4G will drain your battery a bit faster leaving you with ‘only 9 hours’ on a charge.

Software wise Apple improved on iPhoto delivering ‘new gestures, new effects, multi-touch editing’ to your new iPad 3. iPad 3 will enable recalling similar pics by double tapping. iPad 3 apps should be really make a use of this extraordinary processing power. Some 20,000 new apps are promised to take advantage of the new iPad 3.

Price as expected will be capped al iPad 2 level, bringing the cost of ‘old’ iPad 2 down a bit. Here are the new prices as of March 16th, iPad 3 launch. Starting at $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB iPad 3. 4G will cost you $130 extra. iPad 3 can be preordered already, but actual launch won’t be until March 16th.
