Out-of-box, the iPad can play only a couple of formats – m4kv and mp4 and there is absolutely no support for one of the most popular video formats – Xvid. However, there is a third party solution that claims to solve the problem. The app is called CineXPlayer which lets the user transfer movies in Xvid format directly on the iPad, skipping the need to encode them to iPad-friendly formats.
The videos are transferred over USB via iTunes’ File Sharing option. I love the fact that the app can automatically bookmark the playback positions, which allows the user to resume from where he left-off. The app is available for free from the AppStore. [link]
