CloudOn

One of the main reasons people don’t switch to the joy of Apple’s iPad full time is the need for a Windows environment in which to run Microsoft Office. Admittedly it’s bloated, slow and labyrinthine, but Microsoft’s Office suite, and Word in particular, are essential for many jobs. Now there’s CloudOn, a combo of app and cloud service, which enables users to create and edit Office docs using an iPad. Behind the scenes Office-compatible software runs on the CloudOn servers, so you will need to be online to use it.

The CloudOn server site lets you open mail or docs via the usual ‘Open with’ route, and then you can work as if in a Windows environment, except with all the slickness and joy of using an iPad.

CloudOn can also sync with your Dropbox account, letting you edit documents and then sending back the updated version to your server account when you’re done. Incredibly CloudOn a free app, though it’s been temporarily withdrawn from the App Store because of overwhelming demand (why does that not surprise us?) although screenshots show a little tweaking of the interface is in order. Perhaps a paid premium version is in the pipeline?

Now, if you’re serious about running docs on your iPad you should consider Documents To Go® Premium - Office Suite for $16.99, but if you’re in the need of fixing few docs here and there, CloudOn will do.
